Static Cling & Window Decal Information
Static Clings
Static Clings are usually made of a flexible vinyl or plastic that has a very smooth coat and will stick to clean glass surfaces utilizing the moisture in the air and on the glass to adhere to the surface. In cold weather and dry climates static clings tend to dry up, freeze and then fall off easily. The vinyl material will not retain its "cling" abilities for more than a year or two depending on the conditions the cling is exposed to.
No Face Adhesive
If your sticker or decal is to be stuck to the inside of a window so it can only be seen from the outside of the window this is the best option. The entire sticker is the same colour and can stick on both the inside or outside of windows. Very use to write a reverse message to be seen clearly in peoples rear view mirrors.
No Back Adhesive
Back adhesive is the most common way stickers are produced. The sticky is on the back. Clear stickers always have a layer of opaque white ink that is put behind the colored areas of the sticker, leaving the non-image areas of the sticker clear.
Clear Sandwich Printing
Let's say you want to have a window sticker that reads the same way when looked at from both sides of the window. This requires sandwich printing which is the process of printing the image twice, and putting opaque white ink down in between the images. Watch this video to see an example.
Variable Data
If you want to print stickers or decals that have a series of numbers on them we can do that for you. Examples include licenses and permits for parking or property access. Other uses include serializing products, personalization and encryption and licensing for software.
QR Codes
Combine variable data and QR codes for dynamic data embedded in your sticker or decal. Local directories like Yelp! and Urban Spoon and Google Places use this sticker technology for window decals for businesses to display in their window.

Vinyl decalsare essentially heavy-duty stickers. The material is a thin plastic called Vinyl Decal Film that sticks to a variety of surfaces, including glass, metal, wood and plastic. Vinyl filmis also weatherproof and has a stunning gloss finish. Most commonly, vinyl decalsare printed with an opaque, full-color design on one side and adhesive on the other, but many other options are available.
Pros: Vinyl decals are perfect for outdoor use, because they can withstand the elements, including UV rays and rain. Designed to be long-lasting, they can be placed on almost any type of surface. Vinyl decals can also be produced with unique options such as lettering, shapes, inside glass, double-sided and clear vinyl.
Cons: Removing vinyl decals takes a little effort. It is possible to remove them; it just takes patience and a focused heat source. Vinyl decals are, because of this, designed to be a semi-permanent window sign. Once removed, vinyl decals are not reusable.
Best for: If you are looking for long-term signage that can withstand outside exposure, such as store hours on a front door or other permanent branding, vinyl window decalsare the perfect sign choice for your needs.
Static Clings
Static clingsare made from a thin plastic film that “clings” to different surfaces with static electricity. Static cling will cling to smooth surfaces, typically glass, but also plastic and metal. Standard static window clingsare printed with a vibrant full-color, solid design and have a glossy finish.
Pros: Free of adhesive, window clingscan easily be removed, repositioned, and reused. Both sides of the material cling to glass so they can be placed inside or outside a window. If you want your static cling to be placed on the inside facing out, it is recommended that you add the “Inside Glass” option to keep the ink from staining the glass. Static clings can be printed in any size, from small window cling stickersto large promotional signs. Options such as shape die-cutting and clear static clingare available.
Cons: The lack of adhesive means that static clings are not weather-resistant. Static electricity is not enough to keep static clings secure against the elements. Clingsare not recommended for vehicles.Additionally, the material begins to lose its ability to cling over time and may need to be re-installed or even replaced.
Best for: Static clings are great for short-term signage (less than 6 months), such as temporary promotions and branding. Clings can also be used for personal events, such as weddings.
In order to choose the right material, first ask yourself what you need. If you want something temporary that is easy to remove and can be reused, static clings are the right choice. For long-lasting installations, choose vinyl decals, which offer weather-resistance and low maintenance.
Static Cling Decals - How Static Are They?
Static cling decals are a popular material used for graphic displays.  Static cling is made from a thin vinyl film that clings to various surfaces.  Typically, they are displayed on glass windows and doors.  However, they can also be displayed on smooth plastic or metal.  Ours stickers are not clear and printed but can even be used in your vehicle reminding you to get an oil change.  Window clings are free of adhesive and can easily be removed, repositioned and reused.  Our static clings are UV protected, and a wash might help restore their cling.
Contrary to what the name might suggest, static cling vinyl does not actually cling to the application surface with static electricity.  You’re probably thinking, “What?  No static electricity in static cling decals?  It even has static in the name.”  In some ways, static charges are like magnetic charges.  Two objects with the same charge will repel; they push away from each other.  If the vinyl decal had a static charge, then it should not stick to itself.  In fact, it should push away from itself.  It’s a similar concept to plastic wrap.  If plastic wrap were statically charged, it would repel itself, but plastic wrap sticks to itself.  Not convinced yet?  Metal is a conductor of electricity, so there is no way that something would stick to it with static cling.  Grab a metal cookie sheet and try to stick a static cling decal to it.  It sticks!
So if it’s not static electricity, then what is it?  It clings to smooth surfaces, such as glass because of cohesive forces between the smooth surfaces.  The soft, highly polished pliable vinyl is so smooth that it acts like a flat suction cup.  This also enables static cling vinyl to adhere to smooth surfaces in a wide range of humidity levels.  This same effect can be seen when stacking plates of glass on top of each other.  The ultra-smooth surfaces wants to bond to each other.
To apply a static cling decal, it is recommended to clean the surface thoroughly and allow it to dry.  Use a tape measure to find the center point at which to place your static cling.  For larger window clings, tape the top to the window.  Lift the bottom of the static cling away from the window and remove the protective backing starting at the top and pulling downward.  Spray the surface of the window liberally with water.  Lay the exposed portion of the decal down onto the window.  Continue peeling away the rest of the backing as you squeegee from top to bottom.  Once the decal is fully applied, squeegee from the center toward the outer edges to remove air bubbles.  You can cover the squeegee with a paper towel or soft cloth to prevent it from scratching the material.  Remove the tape and squeegee the top of the window cling.  Finish by wiping down the edges of the cling with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.  For cleaning, a mild spray of soapy water with a gentle wipe down is all that’s needed.  These decals are easy to remove and reposition if you are not happy with the installation.  Gently remove and reposition your window cling as desired, making sure the material never touches itself.

HOW TO APPLY A STATIC CLING STICKER/DECAL
Static cling stickers/decals are great because they don't use any adhesive and can be easily removed without residue. Instead, they use natural static to adhere to just about any smooth surface. You can even move them and reposition them somewhere else if you wish.
Applying a static cling sticker to a window:
These stickers are designed to go on the inside of your window, facing outwards.
Clean the surface of the window that you will be applying your sticker to thoroughly. Be sure to remove any grease or dust or your sticker may not adhere to the window properly.
Peel your sticker away from the backing paper.
Position the sticker and gently press onto the window.
Once your sticker is in position, you can push out any trapped air working from the centre to the edges.
If you're not happy with the position of your sticker you can gently remove it and start again.

How Do Static Clings Work? – Signage 101
how do static clings work feature image
In this Signage 101 article we’ll take a look at how static clings actually work. After discussing how static clings stick to your desired surface we’ll answer some of the most common questions about using clings for your home or business.
Windows signs are an extremely popular option for a wide variety of uses. Window signs can be used in residential settings for no soliciting signs and security decals. Alternatively in commercial settings almost any store with a bricks-and-mortar location will have some kind of window sign communicating store hours, sales and promotions, branded signs and more.
For those asking what type of window sign to buy for their store or home there are a number of considerations including transparency, whether you want it viewable from the inside or outside, and whether it is intended to be used permanently or temporarily. These considerations are what many people face when deciding between window clings (temporary and non-adhesive) and window decals (semi-permanent and adhesive). While we might touch on some of these aspects in today’s post, we’ve previously written extensively on how to choose between a window decal and window cling. Further, there is additional helpful information and FAQ on decals and clings on their respective product pages. Just scroll to the bottom of those pages and many of the common questions around these products are answered!
How Do Static Clings Stick?
When most people hear or read the product name (clear) static cling they instantly assume that the fact that the cling has no adhesive property that it must adhere to the window using a static charge or static electricity.
But going back to those wonderful kid’s science experiments that we’ve all seen (Bill Nye anyone?) we know that static electricity occurs:
“when two surfaces touch each other and the electrons move from one object to another. One object will have a positive charge and the other a negative charge. Rubbing the items quickly, like when you rub a balloon fast over something or your feet on the carpet, will build up a large charge. Items with different charges (positive and negative) will attract, while items with similar charges (positive and positive) will push away from each other.”
Using these facts it is easy to determine that static clings don’t actually use a static charge. If this were the case it would not stick to itself but actually repel away from itself much like magnets with similar charges. But anyone who has worked with a static cling or even something like plastic wrap knows that it can easily (and frustratingly) stick to itself (see below) if not handled carefully!
static clings sticking together
Static clings will definitely stick to themselves if not careful!
Another great litmus test is to use the example of metal. Metal is a known conductor of electricity. A static cling that is likewise charged should not then stick to metal but repel away from the surface. But through common use we know that static clings will adhere to non-porous metal surfaces. Thus, there is no static charge in the cling!
static cling on metal
Static clings will stick to non-porous surfaces including metal.
static cling on plastic
Clings will also stick to plastic.
Now that we know it’s not actual static electricity nor any kind of adhesive material that causes the cling to adhere like you want it to, we’ve provided a quick explanation of why and how it actually does cling to the applied surface.
The static clings actually work due to the fact that the thin vinyl they are made from act like a mini-suction cup when pressed onto a similar cohesive force or surface. These similar surfaces bond to each other with a little bit of pressure which creates an extremely versatile signage option assuming you have a non-porous surface to apply it to. No adhesive, no static electricity but a functioning window cling!
Knowing how static clings work leads to a greater understanding of when and where they will and won’t function properly in everyday use.
Does The Surface Where Applied Impact Functionality?
Yes! Your static cling will need to be used indoors or outdoors on clean surfaces. A lack of adhesive means that inclement weather can easily cause the cling to begin to peel away from the surface or outright fall off over time, so we usually recommend an interior application. In rare instances extremely high humidity can also cause problems. But the beauty of static clings is the ability to peel it off and reapply it as needed.
Because we most often recommend indoor usage, the most obvious solution for store fronts is to create clear static clings with an “inside glass” option that allows it to be seen from outside your store by approaching customers. This successfully offsets the weather aspect and the need for customers to see your window signs!
The other surface considerations are smoothness and porousness. Any non-smooth or porous surface will not work for clings as the smooth surface of the cling needs something to stick to in order to work properly. Thus, glass surfaces work best but metal and some plastic surfaces will also work.
Do External Elements Affect Stickiness?
Yes. As described above clings can be adversely impacted by weather and even humidity in rare cases. Make sure to use them in a dry indoor location after cleaning the smooth surface where they will be applied.
How Many Times Can I Remove/Reapply My Static Cling?
Unfortunately there isn’t a magic number or even a way to determine a specific number of times that a static cling can be used. Like any other type of signage clings have an estimated lifespan and will eventually lose the ability to stick to your window. While removing and reapplying constantly will undoubtedly shorten the lifespan compared to a situation of apply it once and leave it, static clings are meant to be removed and reapplied. So feel free to use it in this way as often as needed. These window signs truly are a cost effective and versatile solution.
Will They Lose Stickiness? If so, can I regain it?
There are a number of ways that clings may lose their ability to stick. These include the ones listed below:
Printing –  where printed the static cling is not going to stick like it normally would. This should be considered when designing your cling.
Some strong cleaners can ruin the ability of the cling to continually be removed and applied.
Non-smooth or porous surfaces as discussed above.
Lack of use for extended periods of time. Much like elastic in shorts that go bad after years of sitting in a drawer, clings can lose their ability to stick to a smooth surface after years of not being used.
Wet or extremely humid surfaces can cause the cling not to stick.
Dirt or grime build up on your cling can cause it to stop sticking.
Unfortunately once a cling loses it’s ability to stick, it’s difficult to regain it. If you run into this issue, try using a mild detergent and water on your cling to renew its life. Also through proper care and maintenance and use of the cling this ability to adhere to any smooth surface should last a number of years.
Hopefully a better understanding of how static clings stick to windows and the other questions we’ve covered will help you select the type of window sign you might need for your home or storefront.
